There are a few socially aware songs on the Driven Beyond (CD) including the pop-flavored "Carry On," which highlights the importance of AIDS awareness. A portion of the proceeds from the upcoming singles will be donated to groups involved in AIDS awareness education programs. Moreover, other strong messages are sent through "Our Rainbow" (hate crimes), "Angel Eyes" (crystal meth) and "I'm Free" (coping & life challenges). “I drive for depth and passion. The International Family Film Festival
Honors Animator Mogul, Phil Roman
On March 1, 2009 at the famous Raleigh Studios in Hollywood, the International Family Film Festival will present the Lifetime Achievement Award in Film, affectionately known as the “Friz” Award (named for legendary animator, Friz Freleng), to nimator, director and producer Phil Roman, for his Excellence in Animation & Visual Effects. Presenting this prestigious award at the red-carpet IFFF Awards Ceremony & Banquet Sunday evening is Nancy Cartwright, the dynamic voice actor behind ‘Bart Simpson’.
When reflecting on his humble beginnings, Phil shared that he was born of Mexican parents at the dawn of the depression and drew no barriers between people, “We all (different races) lived in the same neighborhood. There was no bigotry because, everyone was poor.” This level playing ground allowed Roman to excel. From a love of books which sparked his imagination, to seeing his first Disney film, “Bambi” at age 11, he knew animation was his calling. A self-starter, he took a correspondence course taught by Charles “Sparky” Schulz, on whose classic series, “Peanuts“, he would later work.
After high school, with only $60.00 in his pocket, Roman got on the bus to LA to follow his dreams. He went to the only school that offered animation classes, became a work-study student to help pay his tuition and held down a job as a movie usher at night. When the Korean War erupted, Roman served his country, then later returned to the Hollywood Art Center School to resume his studies under the GI Bill. The rest, as they say, is history.
From getting his first job as an assistant animator on Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”, to producing “Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm” (USA Network), Roman has had a masterful hand in some of the most successful projects of our time: “Peanuts” and “Garfield” Features and TV Specials; “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”; “Tom and Jerry: The Movie”; as well contemporary TV shows like “The Simpsons”; “King of the Hill”; “Bobby’s World “with Howie Mandel; “Bruno the Kid” with Bruce Willis; and C-Bear and Jamal” with rap artist, Ton Loc; and many more.
6 Emmys later, one is struck by the fact that all of the projects Roman has taken under his wing or has developed have either retained their original “it” factor or are all deliciously unique and distinctive. “The directors’ job is to be true to the creator, use the strengths already inherent in the project.” How refreshing to hear in a day and age when most networks and studios buy product and then make sure it resembles nothing of its creation. “Why destroy that something the creator puts in it? Each series has its own world, its own reality, its own rules.” Roman’s style is not to impose on the original vision.
Also, he notes that there are 3 important factors to great animation, “The story, the characters and how the story is told. This is the job of the director, to make sure all elements work together, “to feel what the author is trying to say and express that.”
Now semi retired, he still finds time to mentor emerging artists. “Animators must be aware of the world”. So if a person possesses a joy for life, even if their portfolio isn’t up to par, he’ll give the candidate a chance. “You can teach animation, but you can’t teach an energy and excitement for life.” However, once given the opportunity, Roman expects the same work ethic of his interns that has governed his own career by saying, “I’ll help you, but you have to help yourself.”
When asked the secret of his success (I’m not supposed to tell anyone, so this is just between me and you), he leaned over and with a twinkle in his eye whispered, “Being dumb.” His words struck me to the core. To this reporter, it meant not playing dumb, or acting dumb and something deeper, more profound: to always be willing to learn, to be open and fearless, to have a childlike innocence, to be surprised and awe-filled. This must be true of most artists in this profession because animators tend to work into there 70’s and 80’s, and why? “Because we laugh!”, Roman exclaims. “It keeps you young.”
Roman will conduct an Up Close & Personal Talk on Animation, Fri. Feb 27th, 1-3 PM in the Charlie Chaplin Theater at Raleigh Studios. Animators, students, youth and lovers of animation, this event is not to be missed if priceless conversation in an intimate setting, with an industry giant, appeals to you. Ticket are $15.00.
Now in it 14th year, Roman joins a distinguished list of IFFF honorees including many of Roman’s mentors and colleagues: Charles Shulz, William Melendez, Joseph Barbera and Friz Freleng. The IFFF Awards Ceremony begins at 6:30PM, Sunday, March 1st and is followed by the IFFF Awards Banquet. Ticket are $75.00.

The 14th Annual International Family Film Festival (IFFF)
Great Stories Bring Families Together
January 26, 2009: Celebrating its 14th year, the 2009 International Family Film Festival (IFFF), held at Raleigh Studios in the heart of Hollywood, Thursday, February 26 - Sunday, March 1st , is turning its spotlight on the theme of Great Stories Bring Families Together.
The 2009 artwork depicts a primitive family huddled around a roaring fire under a starry night sky listening to a magical story being told by the village matriarch. One gets the sense that the tribe is fully engaged in her vivid narration. When asked about the concept behind festival theme, Chris Shoemaker, co-founder of IFFF shared that, "My concept for this year's IFFF art was that women, throughout the ages, represent the keepers and principal storytellers of our cultures. They traditionally foster the care and succor in a family and in so doing, bring and keep the spirit of a family together."
How true this is of his IFFF co-founders, Development Director, Suzanne Shoemaker and Program Director, Patte Dee McKee, the matriarchs of IFFF. The festival was designed by the trio in 1993 to educate, cultivate, and elevate the family film genre by advocating and encouraging the creation and sharing of family films and screenplays through film exhibition, panels, networking and screenplay readings.
"Women are powerful, and as we increasingly see in many of today's cultures, are assuming more key leadership positions in government, business, religion and of course the home. In my own life, my wife (Suzanne and IFFF co-founder) has been my business partner for over 19 years. We've raised 3 boys, started several businesses and traveled the world together. I understand how multi-tasking and effective a woman can be in the home while holding down a career at the same time. It's not hard for me to believe that an ancient woman warrior could captivate an audience in front of a roaring fire. Honestly, I see that happen in my own home!"
Great Stories Bring Families Together begins Thursday, February 26th from 10am until midnight with Screenings in three theaters. IFFF will choose the finalist films for screenings from a record number of submissions representing 23 countries, 24 states and 29 film schools. The first day begins with free screenings for Public School children, and ends with the screening of the Opening Night films followed with a Reception hosted at Raleigh.
